Fiji Searoad Services

Great alternating to being stuck in a big ferry for 12h to get from Vanua Levu, Savusavu to Viti Levu, Suva is Fiji Searoad Services where you cruise on a bus for 4h to west coast of Vanua Levu Nabouwalu, taking a ferry for 2 h,  and another bus for 3 hours from north shores of Viti Levu to Suva.
The offices are located in Suva and Savusavu, the service in very convenient and reliable. Make sure you make a booking, you can always change the date. The bus picks you up and drops you off, everything else in sorted in between.

From Savusavu the bus leaves crazy early in the morning and gets to Suva, just about time to catch the last bus to Nadi.

Viti Levu to Vanua Levu:

Start: out from airport

Many accommodations provide the service, sometimes even free of charge, to pick you up from the airport and take you to safely to your first Fiji bed. It might be good idea to book a bed for the first night, just to use this service after a long airtravel.

When landing to Fiji you must be aware of one thing Fiji-Time. Start taking it easy as soon as you land. Things might not happen just on the clock around here.

Another useful thing to have is a local phone, it makes many arrangements much easier as not everything happens on the world wide web. You can buy pre-pay SIM cards from almost every shop. You can choose between Vodaphone, Digicel, INK. Ink being the cheapest in prices, digicel gives you free calls between other Digicel users and Vodaphone being most widely used and best reception in remote areas, so actually the best one to go with.

Nadis public transport leaves just from in front of the Airport Gates, short walk from the terminals. It should be around 1.70 FJD and 25min  to get to the city-center.

Nadi to Suva

From Nadi to Suva you can go on a scenic 4 hour busdrive, take a mini bus, taxi, rental car or fly in 45 min.

Bus
there are two main bus operators.  Buses run frequently from 7AM to 6:30PM (Suva-Nadi direction 6:45am to 7pm)
Pacific Bus (+679) 330 4366  http://www.pacifictransport.com.fj

Sunbeam  (+679) 6662822 http://www.sunbeamfiji.com/

prefer the Pacific express buses for more room and comfort. Prices are same-same , should be no more than 17 FJD

MiniBus
Minibuses leave as and when there is need for them. Ask around in the busstation, they may leave from around the corner and take off when the bus is full, good if you are travelling with a big group and can fill up the whole 11 seats - there you have your own bus, can stop when and where you wish and drop you to your exact destination! Price should be up to 22 FJD.

Taxi
If you have too uch money to spare, private taxi will happily be at your service. Negotiate the price and time frame to cruise though.

Rental Car
Find the nearest tourdesk for help or ask for local cousin-brothers to provide the service. Be careful! And driving in those roads is not recommended for someone not born there. Driving culture is well....... different. U must look out for potholes on the road and left-handed driving being right-handed one every now and then.

Plain
Take a minute to think here. There is a thing called Fiji-time in Fiji. And the domestic plains sometimes run on this schedule. They might me late. All the time you would be spending in the airport, checking-in, waiting, 45 min flight,  finding a transport to get from Suva Airport the 30 min journey into town - it is rational to travel this distance by bus. But up to you.

Start: out from Nadi

First important step is to get out of Nadi as soon as possible. Maybe stay a night, sleep off the flight, buy a litre tube of sunscreen and pick your point of compass.
Here I concentrate on the north and east and south.
If you choose your holiday destination on west, Yasawas or Mamanucas, you are stuck with the monopoly of tour operators anyways, then just make your way to the nearest tour desk. You will probably leave Nadi from Denarau port or Newtown beachfront. Usually pickups from hostels are provided.

About this blog

Getting around in Fiji independently is very easy and there are ways more than Tour companies offer. You can be an independent traveller and go when and where you wish not there the tour company says you can. Before doing it myself I could find no relevant materials online so I decided to create this blog.

I'm a professional vagabond, circled around Fiji on my own time and expenses for tree months. This website is an obeisance to this wonderful country and people living there.
